We Must Teach the "Whys"

When was the last time your pastor taught from the pulpit about why you are able to believe the things you believe about God and the Bible? Was it last Sunday? The Sunday before? A Sunday last month? A Sunday last year? Ever?

Pastors typically teach the "whats" - what we believe. In all my years of going to church I have never heard a pastor teach the "whys" - why we are able to believe what we believe . . . have you?

The "whys" matter, but they are not taught in our churches. They are not part of the curriculum our churches use with the children we love in their Children's Ministries. Is it any wonder we are losing so many young people and young adults to atheism? When they are faced with the question, "Why do you believe what you believe?" they typically do not have an answer - because their church has not prepared them by teaching them the "whys" - and neither have their parents and/or grandparents.

We must teach the "whys". We need to ask our church to do the same. Teaching the "whys" is just as important as teaching the "whats". We want the children we love to know what they believe - we also want them to know why they are able to believe what they believe. Just as we would never fail to teach them the "whats", we must not fail to teach them the "whys".

Please take a minute, right now, to ask your church to teach the "whys" - from the pulpit and in the Children's Ministry classes. Look for resources to help you do the same (there are not many, but there are a few - check my Life on the Goldilocks Planet series and the little book of answers.) It matters too much - we must teach the ones we love the "whys".
